The UK telecommunications landscape is set for a significant shift as Virgin Media O2, a leading UK network operator, has announced plans to phase out 3G services by 2025.
This move is part of a broader strategy to expand and upgrade its 4G and 5G networks, while also making strides towards energy efficiency.
Why Switch Off 3G?
The 3G network, which was launched two decades ago, accounted for less than 4% of all data on VMO2's network last year. However, it consumed a staggering 11% of the company's total energy.
By switching off 3G, the operator can reallocate mobile spectrum to 4G and 5G services, which are not only superior in terms of performance but also around ten times more energy efficient.
The transition away from 3G will be carried out in phases across the UK, with the expectation to complete by the end of 2025. The 2G network will remain in place to carry calls and texts until 2033. Most customers won't need to take any action during this switch-off period, but VMO2 has pledged to provide additional support to those still using 3G phones.
The end of 3G marks a significant milestone in the evolution of telecommunications. When it was launched, 3G was a game-changer, bringing the concept of mobile internet to life and playing a pivotal role in the development of the smartphone market, internet culture, and consumerism.
